Liwonde National Park Lions Project
|
Chinguni Trust and National Parks and Wildlife have begun a mission to reintroduce lions into Liwonde. Currently there are 6 lions - 1 male, 2 females, and 3 cubs - waiting to be transported up from South Africa.
Liwonde has not seen many lions in the past few years. Up until the mid 90's there were over 70 wandering the park. However, due to excessive poaching, the lion population quickly declined along with other large preadators. Since then, there has been a tremendous recovery of the antelope herds which has created an imbalance of herbivores and carnivores.
Bringing lions back into Liwonde will help return the herds to sustainable numbers.
In order for the lions to be moved up to Liwonde, Chinguni trust must raise $45,000 USD to cover the costs of the lions themselves as well as transport, training park staff, vet fees and various other expenses.
Sponsors will recieve public recognition weekly in the Nation Newspaper, advertising on a large billboard at the entrance ot the park, advertising at fundraising events, and the six highest donors will have the chance to name one of the lions.
