RURAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS' PROJECT:

TO HELP IMPROVE SCHOOL FACILITIES OR HELP CHILDREN LEARN ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES.

1. Improving School Facilities

Primary schools in Malawi are woefully inadequate and are in great need of assistance; many do not even have enough classrooms for the number of children attending the school. We can assist the local schools by providing equipment and the ideas for infrastructure improvements, for example you can use your creative talent to design and paint learning aids on the walls of the classrooms or help establish a garden.

2. Teaching Environmental Issues

All the schools that we work with are close to the park so it is especially important for these children understand the importance of conservation and protecting the environment.

As mentioned, human/wildlife conflict in the park boundary communities is a problem therefore we want to educate the children when they are young to help prevent a negative opinion being formed about conservation. But since our target audience is young the delivery of the environmental messages has to be fun and easy to understand. You can help develop methods for teaching these environmental messages by using, for example, crafts sports and games, English, drama and music. We can also take groups of children to the Park to practice Earth Education, which encourages learners to enjoy, discover new things and ultimately care for the environment.

Namisundu Primary School

  • 2 km outside the Park it has 600 pupils in Standards 1-8 and 14 teaching staff.

  • Four dilapidated rooms, a collapsing thatch shelter and several trees serve as classrooms.

  • There are insufficient and unhygienic toilet facilities.

  • There are no sports facilities and equipment is lacking.
